Homework

At Chalfont St. Giles Infant School and Nursery we have a clear homework policy. Our aims are:

  • To involve parents in the learning process by engaging in regular communication.
  • To encourage children to use every opportunity to share their understanding.
  • To follow up learning that has happened within the classroom.
  • To practise skills taught in school.
  • To encourage thinking and talking about skills taught at school.

The adults and children involved in this process all have a role to play.

Teachers in Foundation Stage 1 (Nursery):

  • Will give a library book once a week to share at home.
  • Will ask the children and parents to do tasks linked to their topics when appropriate.
  • Will follow up these activities back at school.
  • In their final term, children will take home an early reading book to share each week.

Teachers in Foundation Stage 2 (Reception):

  • Will give numeracy homework once every two weeks.
  • Will give the children sets of keywords to learn how to read when appropriate.
  • Will give the children spellings to learn when appropriate.
  • Will test these keywords when appropriate with each child.
  • Will ensure children have reading materials that they can share at home.
  • Will follow up the reading done at home.
  • Will ask the children and parents to do tasks linked to their topics when appropriate.

Teachers in Key Stage 1 (Years 1 and 2)

  • Will give numeracy homework once every two weeks.
  • Will give phonic and key word spellings once a week.
  • Will test these words in the classroom.
  • Will continue giving children sets of keywords to learn how to read.
  • Will test these keywords weekly and when appropriate with each child.
  • Will ensure children have reading materials that they can share at home.
  • Will follow up the reading done at home.
  • Will ask the children and parents to do tasks linked to their topics when appropriate.

The needs of all children will be taken into account when setting homework tasks. These tasks maybe differentiated so that the children can access the learning at their own level.
