Healthy Eating
- At break time the children are encouraged to eat fruit and vegetables provided by the school. If you do not wish your child to participate in this scheme you may send in alternative snacks but please do not allow your child to bring anything apart from fruit and/or vegetables.
- We encourage the children to drink water regularly. They should bring a named drinks bottle containing plain water in their book bag to which they will have access throughout the day.
- The children have packed lunches which are usually eaten in the Memorial Hall. Trolleys are situated in the playground at the beginning of the day, each one labelled with the class name. Please ensure that your child's lunchbox is clearly labelled on the outside. We do not allow sweets or chocolate.
- As we currently have children in school who are allergic to nuts, we would ask that your child does not bring peanut butter sandwiches into school, or nuts for his/her lunch. You should already have signed a letter regarding this and returned it to school.
- Reception and Year 1 go into the hall for the first sitting at 12.00 and Year 2 for the second sitting afterwards. During the summer term, however, when there are more Reception children, the Year 1 classes attend the second sitting for half a term each.
Suggestions for delicious and nutritious packed lunches!
A packed lunch is a healthy and delicious way to enjoy fresh food.
Try to include foods from each group:
- Bread, pasta, rice and potatoes
- Fruit, vegetables and salad
- Meat, fish, eggs and pulses
- Milk and dairy foods
- Some foods containing fat and sugar - BUT not too much!
Some useful ideas!
- Instead of the usual apple, try a little bunch of grapes, half a melon, plums, strawberries, blueberries, some sliced mango, or a kiwi and a spoon. Or mix some up into a great fruit salad!
- Cut up vegetables to be eaten raw can be tasty; carrot, cucumber, cauliflower and celery.
- Make a little salad an everyday experience! Include vegetables like sweet corn, peppers, celery and tomatoes.
What about a dressing for the salad too!
- There are lots of different kinds of bread available. Try pitta, brioche, ciabatta, sun dried tomato bread, poppy seed rolls, chapatti or tortilla wraps.
- Dried fruit can be fun, raisins, apricots, figs and cranberries are just a few.
- Keep the packed lunch cool by freezing a carton of juice overnight and packing it. The lunch box will be a mini cool box - both hygienic and great fun, because at lunch time it will have melted, giving a lovely, slushy drink.
