Key Stage 1

Geography

GeographyIn Key Stage 1 pupils pupils investigate their local area and a contrasting area in the United Kingdom or abroad, finding out about the environment in both areas and the people who live there. They also begin to learn about the wider world. They carry out geographical enquiry inside and outside the classroom. In doing this they ask geographical questions about people, places and environments, and use geographical skills and resources such as maps and photographs.

Aims

The aims of geography at Chalfont St Giles Infant School & Nursery are to help children:

  • develop an interest in their own surroundings and in the world as the home of mankind.
  • to appreciate the variety of physical and human conditions on the earth.
  • to understand some of the physical and human processes which bring about change.
  • to understand what it means to live in one place rather than another.
  • to develop a range of skills and understanding necessary to interpret geographical information and to carry out geographical enquiry.
  • to construct a framework of knowledge and understanding about their home area, their own country and other parts of the world.
  • to develop a sense of place.
