Key Stage 1

Art and Design & Technology

At Chalfont St. Giles Infant School & Nursery we have developed a creative curriculum which is constantly evolving. Many of the foundation subjects, including Art and Design & Technology are taught during the afternoons. These lessons are carefully planned in order to ensure that all of the National Curriculum learning objectives are covered and to build strong cross-curricular links throughout the topics studied.

Focus Art work

Focus Art workEach year group has identified pieces of art to focus on throughout each topic taught, ie a different one for each half term. Some of them are paintings by famous artists, some are illustrations or photos. The children are given opportunities to really look closely at these pieces, to ask questions and think carefully about what the artist might have been trying to do. Much of the work completed throughout the topic - in all subjects - will have strong links to the focus art work.

Resources and finished work

ResourcesWe have a good range of resources available for art in our school. Teachers plan lessons to ensure the children gain experience in using a whole variety of media, including paints, pastels, pencils, clay and paper mache. Some of the children’s favourite art products are clay tiles depicting the moon’s surface, painting sections from the focus artwork and paper mache planets.

Finished WorkIn Design & Technology sessions, the children work hard to plan, make and then evaluate a range of products throughout their time in Key Stage One. These products are linked to the topic that is being covered and include such things as winders to depict a moon landing and moving vehicles that may be found in London.
