School Across The Ages

A school was founded by Sir Hugh Palliser in 1789 for twenty boys and twenty girls.

Katherine Molloy and the Rev. William Jones, her son-in-law, were benefactors of the school. Here is a list of some early benefactors and the money they gave to set up charities for the school.

The money was used to help pay for the education of some of the poor children of the village. Some of the money was used for clothing. Some of the money may have been used for repairing the school buildings.

The most significant dates are as follows:

1789 Sir Hugh Palliser gave the money for 20 boys and 20 girls to be taught for 2 days a week.
1813 Joseph Keen said he would teach the boys every day of the week in the Reading Room.
1815 A National School was founded. It cost £67. It was supported by voluntary contributions.
1859 The old school building was pulled down. A larger one was built.
1860 The new building was opened in December. It cost £300. This is called 'The Palliser Room', and is the oldest part of the current school buildings. Present day use being the hall.
1873 £90 was spent for a cottage to be turned into an Infant School.
1878 The School Board took over.
1904 Two classrooms of the main school building nearest to the School House were built.
1914 The classroom, which was the staff room until summer term 2003 was added.
1924 The two other classrooms were added forming the L shape.
1927 The land next to Silver Hill was purchased from Jane Hughes.
1932 The rest of the land was purchased from Jane Hughes.
1939 The administration block was built.
1952 The Shakman playground was laid out.
1958 The school started to use the Memorial Hall.
1958/9 The toilet blocks were built.
1966 The school became an Infant School and the Nursery was started.
1968 Two temporary classrooms were put in the Shakman playground.
1980 Classrooms were moved from the Shakman playground by a large crane to their present position in the school
1995/6 Cottage refurbished to form library, school museum and cookery room.
1999 New roof for main school. Nursery playground resurfaced. ICT Suite opened. New flood system installed after flooding of the hall and ICT room for a third time.
2001 Millennium garden was completed and opened.
2003 Temporary classrooms were removed from the school playground. Renovations to the school building. Main entrance changed from the left to the right side of the building. New classroom, staff room, toilets and medical room were built and completed in September. A lift was installed between the school and cottage.
2006 The cottage was redeveloped so that the upstairs can be used for storage and classrooms.
2007 The redecoration program for the school is started. Both Nursery and the main playground are re-marked to encourage out door play.
